The work was originally intended for laymen, but quickly found a place as a textbook in seminary education and has seen numerous editions.

God, “who loved them,” by electing them from eternity, and giving in time his grace, which is the seed of glory; “and hath given everlasting consolation,” by the hopes of future blessings, in giving them his grace in this life, which is an earnest or pledge of future glory.
