The Lexham Context Commentary: New Testament surveys each book of the New Testament at several levels—Book, Division, Section, Pericope, Paragraph, and Unit—providing contextually appropriate commentary on each level. The reader of the commentary can easily ascertain the contextual importance of any larger section, or pericope, or even a particular verse of Scripture.

(4:16–18) The return of Jesus will occur with three distinct sounds: Christ’s shout, the archangel’s voice, and the trumpet of God. The word “shout” is a military expression, a “cry of command.” The second sound is the archangel’s voice. Daniel 10:13 implies the existence of several archangels, but the Bible mentions only one by name: Michael (Jude 1:9). The final sound is the trumpet of God (Matt 24:31).
