Structural and Interpretive Issues
For many years, commentators concluded that there is no unifying structure to Numbers, but rather that the book was a repository for material that does not fit well elsewhere in the Pentateuch. However, according to their outlines of the book, scholars agree that Num 1–10 stands as a coherent literary unit. Opinions vary widely about how to divide Num 11–36 (Lee, Punishment and Forgiveness, 1–6).
Although the sentiment that Numbers is an ad hoc collection is still supported, there are two prevailing theories regarding the book’s structure: ring composition and a generational framework. Both theories affect interpretation of the work at large.
