Strictly speaking, the Gospel we are about to study is anonymous. Nothing in the text itself tells us it was written by Matthew in the way that Romans 1:1 tells us the Epistle to the Romans was written by the apostle Paul. But early Christian writers are unanimous in seeing Matthew behind it, and there is no compelling reason to call their witness into question.
