3:7. Their eyes were opened. That is, they now had knowledge of good and evil in their own experience instead of waiting for God’s instructions. But it did not make them like God. Instead it filled them with guilt and shame—and they became painfully conscious of the fact they were naked. That is, they became aware they had nothing to hide their guilt. They were vulnerable to one another and to God. So they sewed (or twisted) the largest leaves available, fig leaves, to make coverings for themselves.
