Joseph and Mary. Early writers, such as Tertullian, Victorinus of Pettau, Origen, and Helvidius, plainly state that these are the children of Joseph and Mary (J. H. Ropes, I.C.C. on James, pp. 53–74; especially p. 54; T. Zahn, Forschungen, VI, p. 309; especially p. 319). Later writers tried to imagine that Joseph had been married twice and that these were the children of the former marriage or that these were children of a sister of Mary, the mother of Jesus.
