It is not chiefly determined by a sense of a paradise lost but of a glory still to appear, the old beauty remade and transfigured, the beauty of the future that has already been embodied in Christ: “the beautiful is only the pre-appearance of the coming truth … [it] carries within itself the promise of truth to come, a future direct encounter with truth … the beautiful is a pre-appearance directed to a goal.”21 Here there is much to be said for the ancient wisdom of Basil the Great (c. 330–379)
