Jesus confronted a person who might have been stuck similarly to how your friend is stuck, feeling helpless and unloved, but somehow refusing to receive the love that was available. This was a crippled man beside the pool of Bethesda. Many people came to the pool to be healed by getting into the water when it was troubled or moving, probably like a whirlpool I guess.
