The phrase “that believing” (Greek, hina pisteuēte) is a purpose clause combining the preposition hina with a present active, subjunctive. John’s objective was not that the reader merely come to a crisis of faith and know certain facts as a result of reading this gospel, but rather that the reader might keep on believing. That which the reader is to believe is perhaps one of the most identifiable statements of Christology—“that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.” The second part of John’s twofold
