a [Calem] Caleb from Judah, and Joshua (Oshea, Num. 13:8, 16) from Ephraim, were the two spies who brought back a true report and urged the people to go up and possess the land (Num. 13:30; 14:24, 30, 38). Though not of the ruling tribe of Judah (Gen. 49:10). Joshua became the second great leader of Israel, succeeding Moses as ruler of the nation (Dt. 34:9–12; Josh. 1:1–18; 3:7–8).
