4:5. Although Matthew and Luke do not report the events of the temptation in the same order, there is no contradiction. Apparently Matthew gave the historical sequences (as the “then” suggests in verses 5 and 11). Luke, however, linked the temptations with the word “and,” which would not necessarily stress a particular order. Jerusalem was called “the holy city” because of the temple (cf.
