Our zeal for God ought to be as fresh as if we had just begun to delight in Him. One of the surest evidences of a living faith is prayer. Jesus has not come into the world to make sin less terrible. If our faith is to grow exceedingly we must maintain constant intercourse with God. When a man speaks so that you cannot understand him, the usual reason is that he does not understand himself. The confession of sin, the longing for mercy, the groaning for grace—these are the soul and spirit of prayer.
