larger-than-life opponents. The two faithful spies reemphasize the natural goodness of the land, the human frailty of the inhabitants, and the overwhelming power of God in their midst. The land, they report, is “an exceedingly good land” and the people of the land “are no more than bread for us.” They get to the theological heart of what is at stake: “Do not rebel against the LORD; and do not fear the people of the land … the LORD is with us; do not fear them” (14:7–9).
