throughout these closing chapters (see 5:14, 18, 23; 6:2, 12, 13, 15). Because of the importance of this section of the epistle, we shall devote two chapters to it. The present chapter covers verses 16–21, while the remaining verses of Galatians 5, including Paul’s famous statement on ‘the fruit of the Spirit’, will be the subject of chapter 29. The words, ‘I say then’ (Gal. 5:16), announce a new section of the epistle, but also serve to link what follows with
