It is well known that seven “signs” of Jesus are recounted in the Gospel of John—quite certainly a number deliberately chosen, seven being associated by the Jews with perfection. In the synoptic Gospels the evangelists do not describe the miracles of Jesus as “signs”; they use rather the ordinary Greek term for miracle, namely dynamis (cf. dynamic, dynamite).
