In the New Testament the term “bishop” means “overseer”; he was the overseeing elder. For many years I did not claim to be a pastor or anything else. By divine revelation, I said, “I am the overseeing elder.” I knew that was what I was, and I encouraged the elders to enter in with me to the pastoral functions for the sheep. Now and then God raised up one who was a bishop. We have bishops now: overseeing elders who assume specific areas of responsibility as the work is delegated. In the New Testament
