the anointing which ye received of Him abideth in you,—for the subject of the anointing see notes on v. 20. The word “of” represents the preposition apo, which signifies “from” and suggests the divine source of the anointing. The apostle more frequently uses para with this verb, which thus means “to receive at the hand of” (see John 5:41, 44; 2 John 4; Rev. 2:27). As the anointing symbolically stands for the Holy Spirit, it is clear from this statement that even in the youngest believer the Spirit
