In the title of the book, its author is described as son of David and king in Jerusalem. This suggests Solomon, but the alias Qoheleth suggests an anonymous ‘royal’ figure from the line of David whose name and actual identity are deliberately obscured. This would have been obvious to the live audiences who attended Qoheleth’s oral performances, while later readers of the book soon neglected the pseudonym and latched on to the royal aspects of his description.
