be a witness: Literally, “The Lord will be listening.” This is not the normal Hebrew word for “witness” used in covenant-making ceremonies (Deut. 30:19; Josh. 24:22), but the sense is the same. God is called to be a witness to the covenant agreement (1 Sam. 20:12).
