If I must decide whether a person should be allowed to join the church, I look for a “credible profession,” that is, a profession of Christ that is not contradicted in any visible way by the person’s life. That is, of course, a fallible process. It’s not a judgment of a person’s heart. The person may be orthodox in his profession, not guilty of anything scandalous, while still hating God in his heart.
