A sacrament is not something to be seen and to be understood and interpreted, but something that is to be practiced. And using the word “sign” will sometimes mislead us into thinking it’s just there to be viewed. Many Christians have described sacraments as visible signs of invisible grace. This captures a certain reality of the sacrament, of sacraments of baptism and the Lord’s Supper, but this too I think can be misleading.
