it that we become the righteousness of God in the sense of Jer. 23:6; 33:16 (יְהוָֹה צִדְקֵנוּ; LXX 40:11 אAQ: κύριος δικαιοσύνη ἡμῶν). This does not mean, of course, that δικαιοσύνη is understood as an attribute in isolation from God. The righteousness is still God’s. But the identification is expressed as strongly as possible. In Phil. 3:7–11, too, legal and “mystical” themes are linked. Indeed, throughout Romans it is impossible to separate the state of justification from being in Christ.
