2. “Profane” (→ 790) as distinct from ἅγιος. The holy city will be clear of everything profane (Rev. 21:27).43 The sacred blood of the covenant must not be profaned, Hb. 10:29 (κοινὸν ἡγεῖσθαι, opp. ἁγιάζειν).44 In Mk. 7:2 κοιναῖς χερσίν, “with cultically unclean hands,” elucidated by the ἀνίπτοις, corresponds to the Heb. טָמֵא, so that ἀκαθάρτοις would be a more precise translation.45 A material concept of purity is transcended in the NT.
