In addition to this descriptive level (experiencing the image as an image), there are several interpretive activities in which we need to engage. I am sure that it will surprise some of my readers to think of interpreting what I call the straight image (as distinct from metaphor and simile, which compare one thing to another). But even the straight image requires interpretation. Three specific
