Internal evidence all points to Pauline authorship. The writer claims to be Paul (1:1), the author’s co-workers are associates of Paul’s (2:19–23), the conditions of his imprisonment are mentioned (1:12–14), and the vocabulary and thought is compatible with Paul.89 The recipients were members of the church in Philippi that Paul established on his second missionary journey.
