. The word translated “hell” is the Greek word hades. This word is found eleven times in the New Testament. In the KJV it is translated “hell” ten of those times and “grave” the other time. Hades, however, is not the grave but is “the region of departed spirits of the lost” (Vine). Hades also included “the blessed dead in periods preceding the ascension of Christ” (Ibid.).
