in this world, that takes no action in it, is not a faith directed to the God of the Bible. The God who raised Jesus’ dead body to life again is not the God of dead, inactive faith. As we probe James’s discussion of the relationship between faith and works, we may sense a tension with what Paul writes about this. He insists that God makes a person righteous by faith, not by works (see Romans 3:28; Galatians 2:16; Ephesians 2:8, 9), while James says that faith without works is dead. Who is right?
