In Geneva the liturgical aesthetics were not so austere. Like Zwingli, Calvin did remove organs, not because he despised music but because he understood its attraction and potential for abuse. But Calvin dissented from Zwingli’s spiritualizing of the Pauline writings about song. Believers should really sing, both with voice and heart. The question, then, was what to sing.
