1 THE DEUTERONOMISTIC HISTORY The Former Prophets 1 AND 2 SAMUEL are placed in the prophetic division of the tripartite Hebrew canon (cf. Lk. 24:44), being reckoned together with Joshua, Judges, and Kings as ‘The Former Prophets’. This expression occurs twice in the Old Testament (Zech. 1:4; 7:7) in reference to the classical prophets of the pre-exilic era, but its use as a canonical term is distinctly post-biblical.
