backslidings, meshubah (meh-shoo-vah); Strong’s #4878: Turning back, turning away; defecting; faithlessness, apostasy, disloyalty; reverting, backsliding. This noun is found 12 times in the OT, 9 times in Jer. alone. The 3 other references are Prov. 1:32; Hos. 11:7; 17:4. The root word is shub, a verb which means to “turn, return, or repent.” If repentance is a “turning around,” backsliding is a “turning back,” or “turning away” from God.
