According to his own testimony he toiled not simply to win converts, but to help them reach maturity in Christ. Paul reminded the Corinthians of his personal care for them in this way: "Even though you have ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel" (1 Corinthians 4:15).
