Philippians was written around AD 62, more than 10 years after Paul started this church. Paul writes to all of the Christians who live in Philippi, but he specifies the “overseers and deacons” (Phil 1:1). This greeting is unique among Paul’s letters and suggests that the church was large and established. The affectionate and personal tone of Philippians has led Gordon Fee and others to refer to it as a “friendship” letter. Paul was clearly fond of these people and seemed to know them quite well.
