The belief that the story teaches is unambiguous: God will fight for his people, if his people, and particularly his shepherds, obey and believe that he is who he says he is. David in both of his speeches, which are long for Hebrew narrative, rhetorically powerful, and eloquent, made these points in ways no one paying attention can miss. The story is less about “overcoming giants” than it is about seeing situations from God’s perspective and acting in faith on that belief. In stark contrast to Saul
