When the first Jewish exiles returned from Babylon to Jerusalem and Judah, they viewed the worship of the Lord as their first priority. After all, the emperor Cyrus had commissioned them to rebuild the temple and reinstitute the sacrificial system (Ezra 1:3). However, they found that their neighbors in the land were not anxious to see true biblical worship resume. It challenged a social system with which they were comfortable.
