Why write a book about the role of the law in the Bible? A book on the law is important for several reasons. First, one’s understanding of the law determines how one puts the whole Bible together. How do the new covenant and the old covenant relate? What is the relationship between what is commonly called the law and the gospel? A central issue in forming a whole biblical theology—in proclaiming “the whole counsel of God” (Acts 20:27)—is the place of the law. Is the Mosaic law still
