The death of Moses overshadows the book. Even in chapter 1 Moses reminds them that the LORD had said to him, ‘You shall not enter (the land)’ (Deut. 1:37). Joshua is mentioned first in Deuteronomy 1:38, and every time he is mentioned thereafter (e.g. Deut. 3:21) it’s a reminder that Moses is going to die. Moses keeps repeating to them that he does not have permission to enter the land with them. We find it movingly in Deuteronomy 3:23–28, ‘At that time I pleaded with the LORD: “O Sovereign LORD,
