The specific set of duties to be performed by the first deacons is given to us in Acts 6:1–7. In that situation, it was described as “waiting on tables.” I believe this passage not only teaches the basic reason for which deacons exist but also indicates the broad applications that may be made to their role. The role of deacons is to serve the people, doing tasks that someone other than the pastor can do. (“It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.”)
