But for now, what we need to understand [is] that, at its root, Torah is instructional. So while we’re focusing more specifically on legal texts—all the “if you shall,” and “if you shall not,” and all of these things—we have to understand that Torah is not just law for the sake of having a rule. It is instruction. And that is why the same word that’s used for legal texts can also be used to introduce broad parts of the OT, like, for example, the Pentateuch—all five books of the Bible at the beginning.
