As the priests sacrificed the animals, the people understood that the animal was a substitute for their sins. Such a visual demonstration of their sin problem would have ministered some form of conviction. Likewise, the Spirit ministered conviction through the prophets. The classic illustration in the Old Testament is Nathan’s coming to David after David had sinned against Uriah and Bathsheba.
