SEDGWICK The title ‘Ecclesiastes’ is from the LXX, and represents the nearest term the translators of that version could find to the Hebrew Qoheleth, a difficult word occurring nowhere else in Old Testament literature (a feminine part of the Qal. conj.). Its most probable meaning is ‘one who convenes an assembly,’ or ‘one who holds office as teacher or lecturer.’ Hence the not very happy ‘Preacher’ of AV.
