In addition to being called holy ones, the Ephesians are “faithful in Christ Jesus.” Grammatically, this clause is unusual. The absence of a definite article before “faithful” seems to indicate that “the saints” or “the holy ones” and “faithful” are to be taken together as a common designation of a single group, as in the very similar usage in Col 1:2.6 It is important to remember, however, that the Ephesians’ status as “holy” and “faithful” is tied to being “in Christ Jesus” (cf. 2:19–22).
