Look at how John describes it as unquenchable. John and Jesus borrow the harshest image of their day for the resurrection of the damned. Most often in the Gospels, it’s used to scare religious people out of their complacency, to let them know that religion alone doesn’t make us right before God. We need to turn to Jesus Christ.
