Matthew 1:1—literally, it’s “The book of the genesis of Jesus Christ.” This is the Greek translation of Gen 5:1, which speaks of the book of the genesis of someone. You have similar phrases elsewhere in the book of Genesis. But usually Genesis records, in conjunction with this, not the ancestors but the descendants that follow the title. Here, however, it reports Jesus’ ancestors, because even Jesus’ ancestors depend on Him in God’s purpose.
