God’s Alienation or Man’s? Because of the repeated references in these passages to Christ’s cross work as a reconciling event, this characterization of his death achievement is not disputed. It is acknowledged on all sides that his death work, construed as a reconciling work, presupposed that a state of alienation existed between God and man because of human sin, and that his death removed that alienation or enmity. But what is debated is whose alienation or enmity was it that was addressed and
