THE NATURE OF THE IMAGE While there is a general consensus among scholars today that no distinction should be drawn between “image” and “likeness,” there is no such consensus regarding what the “very image” is or means. Some scholars (e.g., Buswell) 12 suggest that the image in man (or at least an aspect of it) is his dominion over the creation. But Genesis 1:26 seems to indicate that dominion was to be a bestowment upon God’s image bearer, an investiture grounded in and contingent upon the fact
