The letters of John speak words of encouragement and reproach to the grave concerns of the early church, yet reveal a God who not only loves his people, but wants them to experience life abundantly. A clear subdivision runs from 3:11–24. First John 4:1 not only introduces one of the most clearly defined units in the letter but changes John’s topic abruptly. Furthermore, 3:11 buttresses the command to love as coming from the beginning, and 3:23 reminds us that this exhortation comes from Jesus.
