also excludes from the proud the possibility of finding a righteousness outside himself. For he has presumed to define himself as the source of his own goodness. The consequence of such self-exaltation is seen concretely at another point in the case of Israel’s “acting presumptuously” (ʿpl—Num. 14:44; cf. Deut. 1:43). They were beaten mercilessly by their enemies because they presumed that in themselves they possessed adequate resources for victory. So by these words of Habakkuk Scripture makes it
