Elijah as well as John the Baptist, that prophet par excellence of the new covenant, Habakkuk appeared as a “voice” and nothing more. He must be heard because he was the bearer of God’s message, not because of what he was in himself. The fact that Habakkuk saw his message probably stresses more the revelational character of the vision than the mode by which it was communicated. Rather than originating from the prophet’s own subconscious, this word came directly from God himself. The message of Habakkuk
