Psalm 8 is a hymn of praise, the first such in the Psalter. The poet stands on the earth and looks toward the heavens. Limburg has described this as “a psalm for stargazers,”1 and indeed, it is that. But even more, this is a psalm for soul searchers. Overcome by the vast expanse of creation, the psalmist is led to ask the searching internal question about the purpose of human existence: What are human beings that you remember them? Or mortal persons that you attend them?
