1 But athe Spirit explicitly says that bin later times some will 1fall away from the faith, paying attention to cdeceitful spirits and ddoctrines of demons,
2 by means of the hypocrisy of liars aseared in their own conscience as with a branding iron,
3 men who aforbid marriage and advocate babstaining from foods which cGod has created to be dgratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth.
4 For aeverything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is breceived with gratitude;
5 for it is sanctified by means of athe word of God and prayer.
6 In pointing out these things to athe brethren, you will be a good bservant of Christ Jesus, constantly nourished on the words of the faith and of the 1csound doctrine which you dhave been following.
7 But 1have nothing to do with aworldly bfables fit only for old women. On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of cgodliness;
8 for abodily discipline is only of little profit, but bgodliness is profitable for all things, since it cholds promise for the dpresent life and also for the life to come.
9 aIt is a trustworthy statement deserving full acceptance.
10 For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed aour hope on bthe living God, who is cthe Savior of all men, especially of believers.
11 1aPrescribe and teach these things.
12 aLet no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, blove, faith and purity, show yourself can example 1of those who believe.
13 aUntil I come, give attention to the public breading of Scripture, to exhortation and teaching.
14 Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through aprophetic utterance with bthe laying on of hands by the 1cpresbytery.
15 Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all.
16 aPay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will 1bensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you.
1 aDo not sharply rebuke an bolder man, but rather appeal to him as a father, to cthe younger men as brothers,
2 the older women as mothers, and the younger women as sisters, in all purity.
3 Honor widows who are awidows indeed;
4 but if any widow has children or grandchildren, athey must first learn to practice piety in regard to their own family and to 1make some return to their parents; for this is bacceptable in the sight of God.
5 Now she who is a awidow indeed and who has been left alone, bhas fixed her hope on God and continues in centreaties and prayers night and day.
6 But she who agives herself to wanton pleasure is bdead even while she lives.
7 1aPrescribe these things as well, so that they may be above reproach.
8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has adenied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
9 A widow is to be aput on the list only if she is not less than sixty years old, having been bthe wife of one man,
10 having a reputation for agood works; and if she has brought up children, if she has bshown hospitality to strangers, if she chas washed the 1saints’ feet, if she has dassisted those in distress, and if she has devoted herself to every good work.
11 But refuse to put younger widows on the list, for when they feel asensual desires in disregard of Christ, they want to get married,
12 thus incurring condemnation, because they have set aside their previous 1pledge.
13 At the same time they also learn to be idle, as they go around from house to house; and not merely idle, but also agossips and bbusybodies, talking about cthings not proper to mention.
14 Therefore, I want younger widows to get amarried, bear children, bkeep house, and cgive the enemy no occasion for reproach;
15 for some ahave already turned aside to follow bSatan.
16 If any woman who is a believer ahas dependent widows, she must bassist them and the church must not be burdened, so that it may assist those who are cwidows indeed.
17 aThe elders who brule well are to be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who cwork hard 1at preaching and teaching.
18 For the Scripture says, “aYou shall not muzzle the ox while he is threshing,” and “bThe laborer is worthy of his wages.”
19 Do not receive an accusation against an aelder except on the basis of btwo or three witnesses.
20 Those who continue in sin, arebuke in the presence of all, bso that the rest also will be fearful of sinning.
21 aI solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of His chosen angels, to maintain these principles without bias, doing nothing in a spirit of partiality.
22 aDo not lay hands upon anyone too hastily and 1thereby share bresponsibility for the sins of others; keep yourself 2free from sin.
23 No longer drink water exclusively, but ause a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.
24 The sins of some men are quite evident, going before them to judgment; for others, their sins afollow after.
25 Likewise also, deeds that are good are quite evident, and athose which are otherwise cannot be concealed.
Instructions to Those Who Minister
1 aAll who are under the yoke as slaves are to regard their own masters as worthy of all honor so bthat the name of God and our doctrine will not be 1spoken against.
2 Those who have believers as their masters must not be disrespectful to them because they are abrethren, but must serve them all the more, because those who 1partake of the benefit are believers and beloved. bTeach and 2preach these principles.
3 If anyone aadvocates a different doctrine and does not 1agree with bsound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine cconforming to godliness,
4 he is aconceited and understands nothing; but he 1has a morbid interest in bcontroversial questions and cdisputes about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions,
5 and constant friction between amen of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who bsuppose that 1godliness is a means of gain.
6 aBut godliness actually is a means of bgreat gain when accompanied by ccontentment.
7 For awe have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either.
8 If we ahave food and covering, with these we shall be content.
9 aBut those who want to get rich fall into temptation and ba snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction.
10 For athe love of money is a root of all 1sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have bwandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
11 But aflee from these things, you bman of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, cfaith, dlove, 1perseverance and gentleness.
12 aFight the good fight of bfaith; ctake hold of the eternal life dto which you were called, and you made the good econfession in the presence of fmany witnesses.
13 aI charge you in the presence of God, who 1gives life to all things, and of bChrist Jesus, who testified the cgood confession dbefore Pontius Pilate,
14 that you keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the aappearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,
15 which He will 1bring about at athe proper time—He who is bthe blessed and conly Sovereign, dthe King of 2kings and eLord of 3lords,
16 awho alone possesses immortality and bdwells in unapproachable light, cwhom no man has seen or can see. aTo Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen.
17 Instruct those who are rich in athis present world bnot to be conceited or to cfix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, dwho richly supplies us with all things to enjoy.
18 Instruct them to do good, to be rich in agood 1works, bto be generous and ready to share,
19 astoring up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may btake hold of that which is life indeed.
20 O aTimothy, guard bwhat has been entrusted to you, avoiding cworldly and empty chatter and the opposing arguments of what is falsely called “knowledge”—
21 which some have professed and thus agone astray 1from bthe faith.
cGrace be with you.
Timothy Charged to Guard His Trust
1 Paul, aan apostle of bChrist Jesus 1cby the will of God, according to the promise of dlife in Christ Jesus,
2 To aTimothy, my beloved 1bson: cGrace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 aI thank God, whom I bserve with a cclear conscience 1the way my forefathers did, das I constantly remember you in my 2prayers night and day,
4 alonging to see you, beven as I recall your tears, so that I may be filled with joy.
5 1For I am mindful of the asincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and byour mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well.
6 For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh athe gift of God which is in you through athe laying on of my hands.
7 For God has not given us a aspirit of 1timidity, but of power and love and 2discipline.
8 Therefore ado not be ashamed of the btestimony of our Lord or of me cHis prisoner, but join with me in dsuffering for the egospel according to the power of God,
9 who has asaved us and bcalled us with a holy ccalling, dnot according to our works, but according to His own bpurpose and grace which was granted us in eChrist Jesus from fall eternity,
10 but anow has been revealed by the bappearing of our Savior cChrist Jesus, who dabolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,
11 afor which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle and a teacher.
12 For this reason I also suffer these things, but aI am not ashamed; for I know bwhom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to cguard what I have entrusted to Him 1until dthat day.
13 1aRetain the bstandard of csound words dwhich you have heard from me, in the efaith and love which are in fChrist Jesus.
14 Guard, through the Holy Spirit who adwells in us, the 1btreasure which has been entrusted to you.
15 You are aware of the fact that all who are in 1aAsia bturned away from me, among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes.
16 The Lord grant mercy to athe house of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me and bwas not ashamed of my 1cchains;
17 but when he was in Rome, he eagerly searched for me and found me—
18 the Lord grant to him to find mercy from the Lord on athat day—and you know very well what services he rendered at bEphesus.
1 You therefore, my 1ason, bbe strong in the grace that is in cChrist Jesus.
2 The things awhich you have heard from me in the presence of bmany witnesses, centrust these to dfaithful men who will be eable to teach others also.
3 aSuffer hardship with me, as a good bsoldier of cChrist Jesus.
4 No soldier in active service aentangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier.
5 Also if anyone acompetes as an athlete, he 1does not win the prize unless he competes according to the rules.
6 aThe hard-working farmer ought to be the first to receive his share of the crops.
7 Consider what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.
8 Remember Jesus Christ, arisen from the dead, bdescendant of David, caccording to my gospel,
9 1for which I asuffer hardship even to bimprisonment as a ccriminal; but dthe word of God eis not imprisoned.
10 For this reason aI endure all things for bthe sake of those who are chosen, cso that they also may obtain the dsalvation which is in eChrist Jesus and with it feternal glory.
11 aIt is a trustworthy statement:
For bif we died with Him, we will also live with Him;
12 If we endure, awe will also reign with Him;
If we 1bdeny Him, He also will deny us;
13 If we are faithless, aHe remains faithful, for bHe cannot deny Himself.
14 Remind them of these things, and solemnly acharge them in the presence of God not to bwrangle about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the hearers.
15 Be diligent to apresent yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling bthe word of truth.
16 But aavoid bworldly and empty chatter, for 1it will lead to further ungodliness,
17 and their 1talk will spread like 2gangrene. Among them are aHymenaeus and Philetus,
18 men who have gone astray from the truth saying that athe resurrection has already taken place, and they upset bthe faith of some.
19 Nevertheless, the afirm foundation of God stands, having this bseal, “cThe Lord knows those who are His,” and, “dEveryone who names the name of the Lord is to abstain from wickedness.”
20 Now in a large house there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also vessels of wood and of earthenware, and asome to honor and some to dishonor.
21 Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from athese things, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, bprepared for every good work.
22 Now aflee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, bfaith, love and peace, with those who ccall on the Lord dfrom a pure heart.
23 But refuse foolish and ignorant aspeculations, knowing that they bproduce 1quarrels.
24 aThe Lord’s bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, bable to teach, patient when wronged,
25 awith gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, bif perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to cthe knowledge of the truth,
26 and they may come to their senses and escape from athe snare of the devil, having been bheld captive 1by him to do his will.
1 But realize this, that ain the last days difficult times will come.
2 For men will be alovers of self, blovers of money, cboastful, carrogant, drevilers, cdisobedient to parents, eungrateful, funholy,
3 aunloving, irreconcilable, bmalicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, 1chaters of good,
4 atreacherous, breckless, cconceited, dlovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,
5 holding to a form of 1agodliness, although they have bdenied its power; cAvoid such men as these.
6 For among them are those who 1aenter into households and captivate 2bweak women weighed down with sins, led on by cvarious impulses,
7 always learning and never able to acome to the 1knowledge of the truth.
8 Just as aJannes and Jambres bopposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, cmen of depraved mind, rejected in regard to the faith.
9 But they will not make further progress; for their afolly will be obvious to all, just bas 1Jannes’s and Jambres’s folly was also.
10 Now you afollowed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, blove, 1perseverance,
11 apersecutions, and bsufferings, such as happened to me at cAntioch, at dIconium and at eLystra; what fpersecutions I endured, and out of them all gthe Lord rescued me!
12 Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus awill be persecuted.
13 But evil men and impostors awill proceed from bad to worse, bdeceiving and being deceived.
14 You, however, acontinue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them,
15 and that afrom childhood you have known bthe sacred writings which are able to cgive you the wisdom that leads to dsalvation through faith which is in eChrist Jesus.
16 aAll Scripture is 1inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for 2training in righteousness;
17 so that athe man of God may be adequate, bequipped for every good work.
1 aI solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to bjudge the living and the dead, and by His cappearing and His kingdom:
2 preach athe word; be ready in season and out of season; breprove, rebuke, exhort, with 1great cpatience and instruction.
3 For athe time will come when they will not endure bsound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires,
4 and awill turn away their ears from the truth and bwill turn aside to myths.
5 But you, abe sober in all things, bendure hardship, do the work of an cevangelist, fulfill your dministry.
6 For I am already being apoured out as a drink offering, and the time of bmy departure has come.
7 aI have fought the good fight, I have finished bthe course, I have kept cthe faith;
8 in the future there ais laid up for me bthe crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on cthat day; and not only to me, but also to dall who have loved His eappearing.
9 aMake every effort to come to me soon;
10 for aDemas, having loved bthis present 1world, has deserted me and gone to cThessalonica; Crescens has gone to 2dGalatia, eTitus to Dalmatia.
11 aOnly bLuke is with me. Pick up cMark and bring him with you, dfor he is useful to me for service.
12 But aTychicus I have sent to bEphesus.
13 When you come bring the cloak which I left at aTroas with Carpus, and the books, especially the parchments.
14 aAlexander the coppersmith did me much harm; bthe Lord will repay him according to his deeds.
15 Be on guard against him yourself, for he vigorously opposed our 1teaching.
16 At my first defense no one supported me, but all deserted me; amay it not be counted against them.
17 But the Lord stood with me and astrengthened me, so that through me bthe proclamation might 1be cfully accomplished, and that all dthe Gentiles might hear; and I was erescued out of fthe lion’s mouth.
18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed, and will 1abring me safely to His bheavenly kingdom; cto 2Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
19 Greet Prisca and aAquila, and bthe household of Onesiphorus.
20 aErastus remained at bCorinth, but cTrophimus I left sick at dMiletus.
21 aMake every effort to come before bwinter. Eubulus greets you, also Pudens and Linus and Claudia and all the brethren.
1 Paul, aa bond-servant of God and an bapostle of Jesus Christ, 1for the faith of those cchosen of God and dthe knowledge of the truth which is eaccording to godliness,
2 in athe hope of eternal life, which God, bwho cannot lie, cpromised 1dlong ages ago,
3 but aat the proper time manifested, even His word, in bthe proclamation cwith which I was entrusted daccording to the commandment of eGod our Savior,
4 To aTitus, bmy true child 1in a ccommon faith: dGrace and peace from God the Father and eChrist Jesus our Savior.
5 For this reason I left you in aCrete, that you would set in order what remains and bappoint celders in every city as I directed you,
6 namely, aif any man is above reproach, the bhusband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of cdissipation or drebellion.
7 For the 1aoverseer must be above reproach as bGod’s steward, not cself-willed, not quick-tempered, not daddicted to wine, not pugnacious, enot fond of sordid gain,
8 but ahospitable, bloving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled,
9 aholding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in bsound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.
10 aFor there are many brebellious men, cempty talkers and deceivers, especially dthose of the circumcision,
11 who must be silenced because they are upsetting awhole families, teaching bthings they should not teach cfor the sake of sordid gain.
12 One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, “aCretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”
13 This testimony is true. For this reason areprove them bseverely so that they may be csound in the faith,
14 not paying attention to Jewish amyths and bcommandments of men who cturn away from the truth.
15 aTo the pure, all things are pure; but bto those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their cmind and their conscience are defiled.
16 aThey profess to know God, but by their deeds they bdeny Him, being cdetestable and ddisobedient and eworthless ffor any good deed.
Duties of the Older and Younger
1 But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for asound doctrine.
2 aOlder men are to be btemperate, dignified, sensible, csound din faith, in love, in 1perseverance.
3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, anot malicious gossips nor benslaved to much wine, teaching what is good,
4 so that they may 1encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,
5 to be sensible, pure, aworkers at home, kind, being bsubject to their own husbands, cso that the word of God will not be dishonored.
6 Likewise urge athe young men to be 1sensible;
7 in all things show yourself to be aan example of good deeds, with 1purity in doctrine, dignified,
8 sound in speech which is beyond reproach, so athat the opponent will be put to shame, having nothing bad to say about us.
9 Urge abondslaves to be subject to their own masters in everything, to be well-pleasing, not 1argumentative,
10 not pilfering, but showing all good faith so that they will adorn the doctrine of aGod our Savior in every respect.
11 For the grace of God has aappeared, 1bbringing salvation to all men,
12 1instructing us to deny ungodliness and aworldly desires and bto live sensibly, righteously and godly cin the present age,
13 looking for the blessed hope and the aappearing of the glory of 1bour great God and Savior, Christ Jesus,
14 who agave Himself for us bto redeem us from every lawless deed, and to cpurify for Himself a dpeople for His own possession, ezealous for good deeds.
15 These things speak and aexhort and areprove with all 1authority. bLet no one disregard you.
1 aRemind them bto be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be cready for every good deed,
2 to malign no one, ato be peaceable, agentle, bshowing every consideration for all men.
3 aFor we also once were foolish ourselves, bdisobedient, cdeceived, denslaved to evarious lusts and pleasures, spending our life in fmalice and fenvy, hateful, hating one another.
4 But when the akindness of bGod our Savior and His love for mankind cappeared,
5 aHe saved us, bnot on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but caccording to His mercy, by the dwashing of regeneration and erenewing by the Holy Spirit,
6 awhom He poured out upon us brichly through Jesus Christ our Savior,
7 so that being justified by His grace we would be made aheirs 1according to the hope of eternal life.
8 aThis is a trustworthy statement; and concerning these things I bwant you to speak confidently, so that those who have cbelieved God will be careful to dengage in good deeds. These things are good and profitable for men.
9 But aavoid bfoolish controversies and cgenealogies and strife and ddisputes about the Law, for they are eunprofitable and worthless.
10 aReject a bfactious man cafter a first and second warning,
11 knowing that such a man is aperverted and is sinning, being self-condemned.
12 When I send Artemas or aTychicus to you, bmake every effort to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to cspend the winter there.
13 Diligently help Zenas the alawyer and bApollos on their way so that nothing is lacking for them.
14 aOur people must also learn to bengage in good 1deeds to meet cpressing needs, so that they will not be dunfruitful.
15 aAll who are with me greet you. Greet those who love us bin the faith.
cGrace be with you all.
PHILEMON
1 aPaul, ba prisoner of cChrist Jesus, and dTimothy 1our brother,
To Philemon our beloved brother and efellow worker,
2 and to Apphia 1aour sister, and to bArchippus our cfellow soldier, and to dthe church in your house:
3 aGrace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
4 aI thank my God always, making mention of you in my prayers,
5 because I ahear of your love and of the faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the 1saints;
6 and I pray that the fellowship of your faith may become effective 1through the aknowledge of every good thing which is in you 2for Christ’s sake.
7 For I have come to have much ajoy and comfort in your love, because the 1hearts of the 2saints have been brefreshed through you, brother.
8 Therefore, athough I have 1enough confidence in Christ to order you to do what is bproper,
9 yet for love’s sake I rather aappeal to you—since I am such a person as Paul, 1the baged, and now also ca prisoner of dChrist Jesus—
10 I aappeal to you for my bchild 1cOnesimus, whom I have begotten in my 2imprisonment,
11 who formerly was useless to you, but now is useful both to you and to me.
12 I have sent him back to you in person, that is, sending my very heart,
13 whom I wished to keep with me, so that on your behalf he might minister to me in my 1aimprisonment for the gospel;
14 but without your consent I did not want to do anything, so that your goodness would anot be, in effect, by compulsion but of your own free will.
15 For perhaps ahe was for this reason separated from you for a while, that you would have him back forever,
16 ano longer as a slave, but more than a slave, ba beloved brother, especially to me, but how much more to you, both cin the flesh and in the Lord.
17 If then you regard me a apartner, accept him as you would me.
18 But if he has wronged you in any way or owes you anything, charge that to my account;
19 aI, Paul, am writing this with my own hand, I will repay it (bnot to 1mention to you that you owe to me even your own self as well).
20 Yes, brother, let me benefit from you in the Lord; arefresh my heart in Christ.
21 aHaving confidence in your obedience, I write to you, since I know that you will do even more than what I say.
22 At the same time also prepare me a alodging, for bI hope that through cyour prayers dI will be given to you.
23 aEpaphras, my bfellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, greets you,
24 as do aMark, bAristarchus, cDemas, cLuke, my dfellow workers.
25 aThe grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be bwith your spirit.1
1 God, after He aspoke long ago to the fathers in bthe prophets in many portions and cin many ways,
2 1ain these last days bhas spoken to us 2in cHis Son, whom He appointed dheir of all things, ethrough whom also He made the 3fworld.
3 1And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact arepresentation of His nature, and 2bupholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made cpurification of sins, He dsat down at the right hand of the eMajesty on high,
4 having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent aname than they.
5 For to which of the angels did He ever say,
“aYou are My Son,
Today I have begotten You”?
And again,
“bI will be a Father to Him
And He shall be a Son to Me”?
6 And 1when He again abrings the firstborn into 2bthe world, He says,
“cAnd let all the angels of God worship Him.”
“aWho makes His angels winds,
And His ministers a flame of fire.”
“aYour throne, O God, is forever and ever,
And the righteous scepter is the scepter of 1His kingdom.
9 “aYou have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness;
bTherefore God, Your God, has canointed You
With the oil of gladness above Your companions.”
“aYou, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth,
And the heavens are the works of Your hands;
11 aThey will perish, but You remain;
bAnd they all will become old like a garment,
12 aAnd like a mantle You will roll them up;
Like a garment they will also be changed.
But You are bthe same,
And Your years will not come to an end.”
13 But to which of the angels has He ever said,
“aSit at My right hand,
bUntil I make Your enemies
A footstool for Your feet”?
14 Are they not all aministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will binherit csalvation?
1 For this reason we must pay much closer attention to 1what we have heard, so that awe do not drift away from it.
2 For if the word aspoken through bangels proved 1unalterable, and cevery transgression and disobedience received a just 2dpenalty,
3 ahow will we escape if we neglect so great a bsalvation? 1After it was at the first cspoken through the Lord, it was dconfirmed to us by those who heard,
4 God also testifying with them, both by asigns and wonders and by bvarious 1miracles and by 2cgifts of the Holy Spirit daccording to His own will.
5 For He did not subject to angels 1athe world to come, concerning which we are speaking.
6 But one has testified asomewhere, saying,
“bWhat is man, that You remember him?
Or the son of man, that You are concerned about him?
7 “aYou have made him 1for a little while lower than the angels;
You have crowned him with glory and honor,
2And have appointed him over the works of Your hands;
8 aYou have put all things in subjection under his feet.”
For in subjecting all things to him, He left nothing that is not subject to him. But now bwe do not yet see all things subjected to him.
9 But we do see Him who was amade 1for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, bbecause of the suffering of death ccrowned with glory and honor, so that dby the grace of God He might etaste death ffor everyone.
10 For ait was fitting for Him, bfor whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to cperfect the 1dauthor of their salvation through sufferings.
11 For both He who asanctifies and those who bare 1sanctified are all cfrom one Father; for which reason He is not ashamed to call them dbrethren,
“aI will proclaim Your name to My brethren,
In the midst of the congregation I will sing Your praise.”
“aI will put My trust in Him.”
And again,
“bBehold, I and the children whom God has given Me.”
14 Therefore, since the children share in 1aflesh and blood, bHe Himself likewise also partook of the same, that cthrough death He might render powerless dhim who had the power of death, that is, the devil,
15 and might free those who through afear of death were subject to slavery all their lives.
16 For assuredly He does not 1give help to angels, but He gives help to the 2descendant of Abraham.
17 Therefore, He 1had ato be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might bbecome a merciful and faithful chigh priest in dthings pertaining to God, to emake propitiation for the sins of the people.
18 For since He Himself was atempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.
1 Therefore, aholy brethren, partakers of a bheavenly calling, consider Jesus, cthe Apostle and dHigh Priest of our econfession;
2 1He was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as aMoses also was in all His house.
3 aFor He has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, by just so much as the builder of the house has more honor than the house.
4 For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.
5 Now aMoses was faithful in all His house as ba servant, cfor a testimony of those things dwhich were to be spoken later;
6 but Christ was faithful as aa Son over His house—bwhose house we are, cif we hold fast our dconfidence and the boast of our ehope firm until the end.
7 Therefore, just as athe Holy Spirit says,
“bToday if you hear His voice,
8 aDo not harden your hearts as 1when they provoked Me,
As in the day of trial in the wilderness,
9 aWhere your fathers tried Me by testing Me,
And saw My works for bforty years.
10 “aTherefore I was angry with this generation,
And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart,
And they did not know My ways’;
11 aAs I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest.’ ”
12 aTake care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart 1that falls away from bthe living God.
13 But aencourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the bdeceitfulness of sin.
14 For we have become partakers of Christ, aif we hold fast the beginning of our bassurance firm until the end,
“aToday if you hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts, as 1when they provoked Me.”
16 For who aprovoked Him when they had heard? Indeed, bdid not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses?
17 And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, awhose bodies fell in the wilderness?
18 And to whom did He swear athat they would not enter His rest, but to those who were bdisobedient?
19 So we see that they were not able to enter because of aunbelief.
1 Therefore, let us fear if, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have acome short of it.
2 For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also; but athe word 1they heard did not profit them, because 2it was not united by faith in those who heard.
3 For we who have believed enter that rest, just as He has said,
“aAs I swore in My wrath,
They shall not enter My rest,”
although His works were finished bfrom the foundation of the world.
4 For He has said asomewhere concerning the seventh day: “bAnd God crested on the seventh day from all His works”;
5 and again in this passage, “aThey shall not enter My rest.”
6 Therefore, since it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly had good news preached to them failed to enter because of adisobedience,
7 He again fixes a certain day, “Today,” saying 1through David after so long a time just aas has been said before,
“bToday if you hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts.”
8 For aif 1Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that.
9 So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.
10 For the one who has entered His rest has himself also arested from his works, as bGod did from His.
11 Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, so that no one will fall, through following the same aexample of bdisobedience.
12 For athe word of God is bliving and cactive and sharper than any two-edged dsword, and piercing as far as the division of esoul and espirit, of both joints and marrow, and fable to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
13 And athere is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are bopen and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.
14 Therefore, since we have a great ahigh priest who has bpassed through the heavens, Jesus cthe Son of God, let us hold fast our dconfession.
15 For we do not have aa high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been btempted in all things as we are, yet cwithout sin.
16 Therefore let us adraw near with bconfidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
1 For every high priest ataken from among men is appointed on behalf of men in bthings pertaining to God, in order to coffer both gifts and sacrifices dfor sins;
2 1ahe can deal gently with the bignorant and cmisguided, since he himself also is 2dbeset with weakness;
3 and because of it he is obligated to offer sacrifices afor sins, bas for the people, so also for himself.
4 And ano one takes the honor to himself, but receives it when he is called by God, even bas Aaron was.
5 So also Christ adid not glorify Himself so as to become a bhigh priest, but He who csaid to Him,
“dYou are My Son,
Today I have begotten You”;
6 just as He says also in another passage,
“aYou are a priest forever
According to bthe order of Melchizedek.”
7 1In the days of His flesh, 2aHe offered up both prayers and supplications with bloud crying and tears to the One cable to save Him 3from death, and He 4was heard because of His dpiety.
8 Although He was aa Son, He learned bobedience from the things which He suffered.
9 And having been made aperfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,
10 being designated by God as aa high priest according to bthe order of Melchizedek.
11 Concerning 1him we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.
12 For though 1by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you athe 2belementary principles of the coracles of God, and you have come to need dmilk and not solid food.
13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an ainfant.
14 But solid food is for athe mature, who because of practice have their senses btrained to cdiscern good and evil.
1 Therefore aleaving bthe 1elementary teaching about the 2Christ, let us press on to 3cmaturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from ddead works and of faith toward God,
2 of ainstruction about washings and blaying on of hands, and the cresurrection of the dead and ceternal judgment.
3 And this we will do, aif God permits.
4 For in the case of those who have once been aenlightened and have tasted of bthe heavenly gift and have been made cpartakers of the Holy Spirit,
5 and ahave tasted the good bword of God and the powers of cthe age to come,
6 and then have fallen away, it is aimpossible to renew them again to repentance, 1bsince they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.
7 For ground that drinks the rain which often 1falls on it and brings forth vegetation useful to those afor whose sake it is also tilled, receives a blessing from God;
8 but if it yields thorns and thistles, it is worthless and aclose 1to being cursed, and 2it ends up being burned.
9 But, abeloved, we are convinced of better things concerning you, and things that 1accompany salvation, though we are speaking in this way.
10 For aGod is not unjust so as to forget byour work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having cministered and in still ministering to the 1saints.
11 And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence 1so as to realize the afull assurance of bhope until the end,
12 so that you will not be sluggish, but aimitators of those who through bfaith and patience cinherit the promises.
13 For awhen God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He bswore by Himself,
14 saying, “aI will surely bless you and I will surely multiply you.”
15 And so, ahaving patiently waited, he obtained the promise.
16 aFor men swear by 1one greater than themselves, and with them ban oath given as confirmation is an end of every dispute.
17 1In the same way God, desiring even more to show to athe heirs of the promise bthe unchangeableness of His purpose, 2interposed with an oath,
18 so that by two unchangeable things in which ait is impossible for God to lie, we who have 1taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of bthe hope set before us.
19 1This ahope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which benters 2within the veil,
20 awhere Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a bhigh priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
Melchizedek’s Priesthood Like Christ’s
1 For this aMelchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the bMost High God, who met Abraham as he was returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,
2 to whom also Abraham apportioned a tenth part of all the spoils, was first of all, by the translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then also king of Salem, which is king of peace.
3 Without father, without mother, awithout genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like bthe Son of God, he remains a priest perpetually.
4 Now observe how great this man was to whom Abraham, the apatriarch, bgave a tenth of the choicest spoils.
5 And those indeed of athe sons of Levi who receive the priest’s office have commandment 1in the Law to collect 2a tenth from the people, that is, from their brethren, although these 3are descended from Abraham.
6 But the one awhose genealogy is not traced from them bcollected 1a tenth from Abraham and 2bblessed the one who chad the promises.
7 But without any dispute the lesser is blessed by the greater.
8 In this case mortal men receive tithes, but in that case one receives them, aof whom it is witnessed that he lives on.
9 And, so to speak, through Abraham even Levi, who received tithes, paid tithes,
10 for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.
11 aNow if perfection was through the Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it bthe people received the Law), what further need was there for another priest to arise caccording to the order of Melchizedek, and not be designated according to the order of Aaron?
12 For when the priesthood is changed, of necessity there takes place a change of law also.
13 For athe one concerning whom bthese things are spoken belongs to another tribe, from which no one has officiated at the altar.
14 For it is evident that our Lord 1was adescended from Judah, a tribe with reference to which Moses spoke nothing concerning priests.
15 And this is clearer still, if another priest arises according to the likeness of Melchizedek,
16 who has become such not on the basis of a law of 1aphysical requirement, but according to the power of ban indestructible life.
“aYou are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.”
18 For, on the one hand, there is a setting aside of a former commandment abecause of its weakness and uselessness
19 (for athe Law made nothing perfect), and on the other hand there is a bringing in of a better bhope, through which we cdraw near to God.
20 And inasmuch as it was not without an oath
21 (for they indeed became priests without an oath, but He with an oath through the One who said to Him,
“aThe Lord has sworn
And bwill not change His mind,
‘You are a priest cforever’ ”);
22 so much the more also Jesus has become the aguarantee of ba better covenant.
23 1The former priests, on the one hand, existed in greater numbers because they were prevented by death from continuing,
24 but Jesus, on the other hand, because He continues aforever, holds His priesthood permanently.
25 Therefore He is able also to asave 1forever those who bdraw near to God through Him, since He always lives to cmake intercession for them.
26 For it was fitting for us to have such a ahigh priest, bholy, cinnocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and dexalted above the heavens;
27 who does not need daily, like those high priests, to aoffer up sacrifices, bfirst for His own sins and then for the sins of the people, because this He did conce for all when He doffered up Himself.
28 For the Law appoints men as high priests awho are weak, but the word of the oath, which came after the Law, appoints ba Son, cmade perfect forever.
1 Now the main point in what has been said is this: we have such a ahigh priest, who has taken His seat at bthe right hand of the throne of the bMajesty in the heavens,
2 a aminister 1in the sanctuary and 1in the btrue 2tabernacle, which the Lord cpitched, not man.
3 For every ahigh priest is appointed bto offer both gifts and sacrifices; so it is necessary that this high priest also have something to offer.
4 Now if He were on earth, He would not be a priest at all, since there are those who aoffer the gifts according to the Law;
5 who serve aa copy and bshadow of the heavenly things, just as Moses 1was cwarned by God when he was about to erect the 2tabernacle; for, “dSee,” He says, “that you make all things according to the pattern which was shown you on the mountain.”
6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, by as much as He is also the amediator of ba better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises.
7 For aif that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion sought for a second.
8 For finding fault with them, He says,
“aBehold, days are coming, says the Lord,
1When I will effect ba new covenant
With the house of Israel and with the house of Judah;
9 aNot like the covenant which I made with their fathers
On the day when I took them by the hand
To lead them out of the land of Egypt;
For they did not continue in My covenant,
And I did not care for them, says the Lord.
10 “aFor this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel
After those days, says the Lord:
1I will put My laws into their minds,
And I will write them bon their hearts.
And I will be their God,
And they shall be My people.
11 “aAnd they shall not teach everyone his fellow citizen,
And everyone his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’
For ball will know Me,
From 1the least to the greatest of them.
12 “aFor I will be merciful to their iniquities,
bAnd I will remember their sins no more.”
13 1When He said, “aA new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. bBut whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is 2ready to disappear.
1 Now even the first covenant had aregulations of divine worship and bthe earthly sanctuary.
2 For there was aa 1tabernacle prepared, the 2outer one, in which were bthe lampstand and cthe table and dthe 3sacred bread; this is called the holy place.
3 Behind athe second veil there was a 1tabernacle which is called the bHoly of Holies,
4 having a golden 1aaltar of incense and bthe ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was ca golden jar holding the manna, and dAaron’s rod which budded, and ethe tables of the covenant;
5 and above it were the acherubim of glory bovershadowing the mercy seat; but of these things we cannot now speak in detail.
6 Now when these things have been so prepared, the priests aare continually entering the 1outer 2tabernacle performing the divine worship,
7 but into athe second, only bthe high priest enters conce a year, dnot without taking blood, which he eoffers for himself and for the 1fsins of the people committed in ignorance.
8 aThe Holy Spirit is signifying this, bthat the way into the holy place has not yet been disclosed while the 1outer tabernacle is still standing,
9 which is a symbol for the present time. Accordingly aboth gifts and sacrifices are offered which bcannot make the worshiper perfect in conscience,
10 since they relate only to afood and bdrink and various cwashings, dregulations for the 1body imposed until ea time of reformation.
11 But when Christ appeared as a ahigh priest of the bgood things 1to come, He entered through cthe greater and more perfect 2tabernacle, dnot made with hands, that is to say, enot of this creation;
12 and not through athe blood of goats and calves, but bthrough His own blood, He centered the holy place donce for all, 1having obtained eeternal redemption.
13 For if athe blood of goats and bulls and bthe ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled sanctify for the 1cleansing of the flesh,
14 how much more will athe blood of Christ, who through 1bthe eternal Spirit coffered Himself without blemish to God, dcleanse 2your conscience from edead works to serve fthe living God?
15 For this reason aHe is the bmediator of a cnew covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been dcalled may ereceive the promise of fthe eternal inheritance.
16 For where a 1covenant is, there must of necessity 2be the death of the one who made it.
17 For a 1covenant is valid only when 2men are dead, 3for it is never in force while the one who made it lives.
18 Therefore even the first covenant was not inaugurated without blood.
19 For when every commandment had been aspoken by Moses to all the people according to the Law, bhe took the cblood of the calves and the goats, with dwater and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both ethe book itself and all the people,
20 saying, “aThis is the blood of the covenant which God commanded you.”
21 And in the same way he asprinkled both the 1tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry with the blood.
22 And according to the 1Law, one may aalmost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and bwithout shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
23 Therefore it was necessary for the acopies of the things in the heavens to be cleansed with these, but athe heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
24 For Christ adid not enter a holy place made with hands, a mere copy of bthe true one, but into cheaven itself, now dto appear in the presence of God for us;
25 nor was it that He would offer Himself often, as athe high priest enters bthe holy place ayear by year with blood that is not his own.
26 Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since athe foundation of the world; but now bonce at cthe consummation of the ages He has been dmanifested to put away sin 1eby the sacrifice of Himself.
27 And inasmuch as ait is 1appointed for men to die once and after this bcomes judgment,
28 so Christ also, having been aoffered once to bbear the sins of many, will appear ca second time for dsalvation ewithout reference to sin, to those who feagerly await Him.
One Sacrifice of Christ Is Sufficient
1 For the Law, since it has only aa shadow of bthe good things to come and not the very 1form of things, 2can cnever, by the same sacrifices which they offer continually year by year, dmake perfect those who draw near.
2 Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have had aconsciousness of sins?
3 But ain 1those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year by year.
4 For it is aimpossible for the bblood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
5 Therefore, awhen He comes into the world, He says,
“bSacrifice and offering You have not desired,
But ca body You have prepared for Me;
6 aIn whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You have taken no pleasure.
7 “aThen I said, ‘Behold, I have come
(In bthe scroll of the book it is written of Me)
To do Your will, O God.’ ”
8 After saying above, “aSacrifices and offerings and bwhole burnt offerings and sacrifices cfor sin You have not desired, nor have You taken pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the Law),
9 then He 1said, “aBehold, I have come to do Your will.” He takes away the first in order to establish the second.
10 By 1this will we have been asanctified through bthe offering of cthe body of Jesus Christ donce for all.
11 Every priest stands daily ministering and aoffering time after time the same sacrifices, which bcan never take away sins;
12 but He, having offered one sacrifice afor 1sins bfor all time, csat down at the right hand of God,
13 waiting from that time onward auntil His enemies be made a footstool for His feet.
14 For by one offering He has aperfected bfor all time those who are 1sanctified.
15 And athe Holy Spirit also testifies to us; for after saying,
16 “aThis is the covenant that I will make with them
After those days, says the Lord:
I will put My laws upon their heart,
And on their mind I will write them,”
He then says,
17 “aAnd their sins and their lawless deeds
I will remember no more.”
18 Now where there is forgiveness of these things, there is no longer any offering for sin.
19 Therefore, brethren, since we ahave confidence to benter the holy place by the blood of Jesus,
20 by aa new and living way which He inaugurated for us through bthe veil, that is, His flesh,
21 and since we have aa great priest bover the house of God,
22 let us adraw near with a 1sincere heart in bfull assurance of faith, having our hearts csprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies dwashed with pure water.
23 Let us hold fast the aconfession of our bhope without wavering, for cHe who promised is faithful;
24 and let us consider how ato stimulate one another to love and bgood deeds,
25 not forsaking our own aassembling together, as is the habit of some, but bencouraging one another; and all the more as you see cthe day drawing near.
26 For if we go on asinning willfully after receiving bthe knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,
27 but a terrifying expectation of ajudgment and bthe fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries.
28 aAnyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
29 aHow much severer punishment do you think he will deserve bwho has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean cthe blood of the covenant dby which he was sanctified, and has einsulted the Spirit of grace?
30 For we know Him who said, “aVengeance is Mine, I will repay.” And again, “bThe Lord will judge His people.”
31 It is a aterrifying thing to fall into the hands of the bliving God.
32 But remember athe former days, 1when, after being benlightened, you endured a great cconflict of sufferings,
33 partly by being amade a public spectacle through reproaches and tribulations, and partly by becoming bsharers with those who were so treated.
34 For you ashowed sympathy to the prisoners and accepted bjoyfully the seizure of your property, knowing that you have for yourselves ca better possession and a lasting one.
35 Therefore, do not throw away your aconfidence, which has a great breward.
36 For you have need of aendurance, so that when you have bdone the will of God, you may creceive 1what was promised.
37 aFor yet in a very little while,
bHe who is coming will come, and will not delay.
38 aBut My righteous one shall live by faith;
And if he shrinks back, My soul has no pleasure in him.
39 But 1we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the 2preserving of the soul.
1 Now faith is the 1aassurance of things 2bhoped for, the 3conviction of cthings not seen.
2 For by it the amen of old 1bgained approval.
3 By faith we understand that the 1aworlds were prepared bby the word of God, so that what is seen cwas not made out of things which are visible.
4 By faith aAbel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain, through which he bobtained the testimony that he was righteous, God testifying 1about his cgifts, and through 2faith, though dhe is dead, he still speaks.
5 By faith aEnoch was taken up so that he would not bsee death; and he was not found because God took him up; for he obtained the witness that before his being taken up he was pleasing to God.
6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who acomes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
7 By faith aNoah, being bwarned by God about cthings not yet seen, 1din reverence eprepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of fthe righteousness which is according to faith.
8 By faith aAbraham, when he was called, obeyed 1by going out to a place which he was to breceive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going.
9 By faith he lived as an alien in athe land of promise, as in a foreign land, bdwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, cfellow heirs of the same promise;
10 for he was looking for athe city which has bfoundations, cwhose architect and builder is God.
11 By faith even aSarah herself received 1ability to conceive, even beyond the proper time of life, since she considered Him bfaithful who had promised.
12 Therefore there was born even of one man, and ahim as good as dead 1at that, as many descendants bas the stars of heaven in number, and innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore.
13 aAll these died in faith, bwithout receiving the promises, but chaving seen them and having welcomed them from a distance, and dhaving confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.
14 For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own.
15 And indeed if they had been 1thinking of that country from which they went out, athey would have had opportunity to return.
16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a aheavenly one. Therefore bGod is not 1ashamed to be ccalled their God; for dHe has prepared a city for them.
17 By faith aAbraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had breceived the promises was offering up his only begotten son;
18 it was he to whom it was said, “aIn Isaac your 1descendants shall be called.”
19 1He considered that aGod is able to raise people even from the dead, from which he also received him back 2as a btype.
20 By faith aIsaac blessed Jacob and Esau, even regarding things to come.
21 By faith aJacob, as he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and bworshiped, leaning on the top of his staff.
22 By faith aJoseph, when he was dying, made mention of the exodus of the sons of Israel, and gave orders concerning his bones.
23 By faith aMoses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the bking’s edict.
24 By faith Moses, awhen he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter,
25 choosing rather to aendure ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin,
26 aconsidering the reproach of 1Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he was looking to the breward.
27 By faith he aleft Egypt, not bfearing the wrath of the king; for he endured, as cseeing Him who is unseen.
28 By faith he 1akept the Passover and the sprinkling of the blood, so that bhe who destroyed the firstborn would not touch them.
29 By faith they apassed through the Red Sea as though they were passing through dry land; and the Egyptians, when they attempted it, were 1drowned.
30 By faith athe walls of Jericho fell down bafter they had been encircled for seven days.
31 By faith aRahab the harlot did not perish along with those who were disobedient, after she had welcomed the spies 1in peace.
32 And what more shall I say? For time will fail me if I tell of aGideon, bBarak, cSamson, dJephthah, of eDavid and fSamuel and the prophets,
33 who by faith aconquered kingdoms, bperformed acts of righteousness, cobtained promises, dshut the mouths of lions,
34 aquenched the power of fire, bescaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made strong, cbecame mighty in war, cput foreign armies to flight.
35 aWomen received back their dead by resurrection; and others were tortured, not accepting their 1release, so that they might obtain a better resurrection;
36 and others 1experienced mockings and scourgings, yes, also achains and imprisonment.
37 They were astoned, they were bsawn in two, 1they were tempted, they were cput to death with the sword; they went about din sheepskins, in goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, eill-treated
38 (men of whom the world was not worthy), awandering in deserts and mountains and caves and holes 1in the ground.
39 And all these, having 1agained approval through their faith, bdid not receive 2what was promised,
40 because God had 1provided asomething better for us, so that bapart from us they would not be made perfect.
1 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also alay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us brun with cendurance the race that is set before us,
2 1fixing our eyes on Jesus, the 2aauthor and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him bendured the cross, cdespising the shame, and has dsat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 For aconsider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary 1band lose heart.
4 aYou have not yet resisted 1bto the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin;
5 and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons,
“aMy son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord,
Nor bfaint when you are reproved by Him;
6 aFor those bwhom the Lord loves He disciplines,
And He scourges every son whom He receives.”
7 It is for discipline that you endure; aGod deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline?
8 But if you are without discipline, aof which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.
9 Furthermore, we had 1earthly fathers to discipline us, and we arespected them; shall we not much rather be subject to bthe Father of 2spirits, and clive?
10 For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, aso that we may share His holiness.
11 All discipline afor the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the bpeaceful fruit of righteousness.
12 Therefore, 1astrengthen the hands that are weak and the knees that are feeble,
13 and amake straight paths for your feet, so that the limb which is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather bbe healed.
14 aPursue peace with all men, and the bsanctification without which no one will csee the Lord.
15 See to it that no one acomes short of the grace of God; that no broot of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be cdefiled;
16 that there be no aimmoral or bgodless person like Esau, cwho sold his own birthright for a single meal.
17 For you know that even afterwards, awhen he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought for it with tears.
18 aFor you have not come to ba mountain that can be touched and to a blazing fire, and to darkness and gloom and whirlwind,
19 and to the ablast of a trumpet and the bsound of words which sound was such that those who heard cbegged that no further word be spoken to them.
20 For they could not bear the command, “aIf even a beast touches the mountain, it will be stoned.”
21 And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, “aI am full of fear and trembling.”
22 But ayou have come to Mount Zion and to bthe city of cthe living God, dthe heavenly Jerusalem, and to emyriads of 1angels,
23 to the general assembly and achurch of the firstborn who bare enrolled in heaven, and to God, cthe Judge of all, and to the dspirits of the righteous made perfect,
24 and to Jesus, the amediator of a new covenant, and to the bsprinkled blood, which speaks better than cthe blood of Abel.
25 aSee to it that you do not refuse Him who is bspeaking. For cif those did not escape when they drefused him who ewarned them on earth, 1much less will we escape who turn away from Him who ewarns from heaven.
26 And aHis voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying, “bYet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heaven.”
27 This expression, “Yet once more,” denotes athe removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
28 Therefore, since we receive a akingdom which cannot be shaken, let us 1show gratitude, by which we may boffer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe;
29 for aour God is a consuming fire.
1 Let alove of the brethren continue.
2 Do not neglect to ashow hospitality to strangers, for by this some have bentertained angels without knowing it.
3 aRemember bthe prisoners, as though in prison with them, and those who are ill-treated, since you yourselves also are in the body.
4 aMarriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; bfor fornicators and adulterers God will judge.
5 Make sure that your character is afree from the love of money, bbeing content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “cI will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,”
“aThe Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid.
What will man do to me?”
7 Remember athose who led you, who spoke bthe word of God to you; and considering the 1result of their conduct, cimitate their faith.
8 aJesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
9 aDo not be carried away by varied and strange teachings; for it is good for the heart to bbe strengthened by grace, not by cfoods, dthrough which those who 1were so occupied were not benefited.
10 We have an altar afrom which those bwho serve the 1tabernacle have no right to eat.
11 For athe bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy place by the high priest as an offering for sin, are burned outside the camp.
12 Therefore Jesus also, athat He might sanctify the people bthrough His own blood, suffered coutside the gate.
13 So, let us go out to Him outside the camp, abearing His reproach.
14 For here awe do not have a lasting city, but we are seeking bthe city which is to come.
15 aThrough Him then, let us continually offer up a bsacrifice of praise to God, that is, cthe fruit of lips that 1give thanks to His name.
16 And do not neglect doing good and asharing, for bwith such sacrifices God is pleased.
17 aObey your leaders and submit to them, for bthey keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. 1Let them do this with joy and not 2with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you.
18 aPray for us, for we are sure that we have a bgood conscience, desiring to conduct ourselves honorably in all things.
19 And I urge you all the more to do this, aso that I may be restored to you the sooner.
20 Now athe God of peace, who bbrought up from the dead the cgreat Shepherd of the sheep 1through dthe blood of the eeternal covenant, even Jesus our Lord,
21 aequip you in every good thing to do His will, bworking in us that cwhich is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, dto whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
22 But aI urge you, bbrethren, 1bear with 2this bword of exhortation, for cI have written to you briefly.
23 1Take notice that aour brother Timothy has been released, with whom, if he comes soon, I will see you.
24 Greet aall of your leaders and all the 1bsaints. Those from cItaly greet you.
25 aGrace be with you all.
1 1aJames, a bbond-servant of God and cof the Lord Jesus Christ,
To dthe twelve tribes who are 2edispersed abroad: fGreetings.
2 aConsider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter bvarious 1trials,
3 knowing that athe testing of your bfaith produces 1cendurance.
4 And let 1aendurance have its perfect 2result, so that you may be 3bperfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
5 But if any of you alacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and 1without reproach, and bit will be given to him.
6 But he must aask in faith bwithout any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, cdriven and tossed by the wind.
7 For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord,
8 being a 1adouble-minded man, bunstable in all his ways.
9 aBut the 1brother of humble circumstances is to glory in his high position;
10 and the rich man is to glory in his humiliation, because alike 1flowering grass he will pass away.
11 For the sun rises with 1aa scorching wind and bwithers the grass; and its flower falls off and the beauty of its appearance is destroyed; so too the rich man in the midst of his pursuits will fade away.
12 aBlessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has 1been approved, he will receive bthe crown of life which the Lord chas promised to those who dlove Him.
13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “aI am being tempted 1by God”; for God cannot be tempted 2by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.
14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.
15 Then awhen lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when bsin 1is accomplished, it brings forth death.
16 aDo not be 1deceived, bmy beloved brethren.
17 Every good thing given and every perfect gift is afrom above, coming down from bthe Father of lights, cwith whom there is no variation or 1shifting shadow.
18 In the exercise of aHis will He bbrought us forth by cthe word of truth, so that we would be 1a kind of dfirst fruits 2among His creatures.
19 1This ayou know, bmy beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, cslow to speak and dslow to anger;
20 for athe anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God.
21 Therefore, aputting aside all filthiness and all 1that remains of wickedness, in 2humility receive bthe word implanted, which is able to save your souls.
22 aBut prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.
23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his 1natural face ain a mirror;
24 for once he has looked at himself and gone away, 1he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was.
25 But one who looks intently at the perfect law, athe law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but 1an effectual doer, this man will be bblessed in 2what he does.
26 If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not 1abridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is worthless.
27 Pure and undefiled religion ain the sight of our God and Father is this: to bvisit corphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained 1by dthe world.
1 aMy brethren, bdo not hold your faith in our cglorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of dpersonal favoritism.
2 For if a man comes into your 1assembly with a gold ring and dressed in 2afine clothes, and there also comes in a poor man in bdirty clothes,
3 and you 1pay special attention to the one who is wearing the afine clothes, and say, “You sit here in a good place,” and you say to the poor man, “You stand over there, or sit down by my footstool,”
4 have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges awith evil 1motives?
5 Listen, amy beloved brethren: did not bGod choose the poor 1of this world to be crich in faith and dheirs of the kingdom which He epromised to those who love Him?
6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you and 1personally adrag you into 2court?
7 aDo they not blaspheme the fair name 1by which you have been called?
8 If, however, you aare fulfilling the 1royal law according to the Scripture, “bYou shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well.
9 But if you ashow partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the 1law as transgressors.
10 For whoever keeps the whole 1law and yet astumbles in one point, he has become bguilty of all.
11 For He who said, “aDo not commit adultery,” also said, “bDo not commit murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a transgressor of the 1law.
12 So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by athe law of liberty.
13 For ajudgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy; mercy 1triumphs over judgment.
14 aWhat use is it, bmy brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can 1that faith save him?
15 aIf a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food,
16 and one of you says to them, “aGo in peace, 1be warmed and be filled,” and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that?
17 Even so afaith, if it has no works, is 1dead, being by itself.
18 aBut someone 1may well say, “You have faith and I have works; show me your bfaith without the works, and I will cshow you my faith dby my works.”
19 You believe that 1aGod is one. bYou do well; cthe demons also believe, and shudder.
20 But are you willing to recognize, ayou foolish fellow, that bfaith without works is useless?
21 aWas not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?
22 You see that afaith was working with his works, and 1as a result of the bworks, faith was 2perfected;
23 and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “aAnd Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness,” and he was called bthe friend of God.
24 You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.
25 In the same way, was not aRahab the harlot also justified by works bwhen she received the messengers and sent them out by another way?
26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also afaith without works is dead.
1 aLet not many of you become teachers, bmy brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a 1stricter judgment.
2 For we all astumble in many ways. bIf anyone does not stumble in 1what he says, he is a cperfect man, able to dbridle the whole body as well.
3 Now aif we put the bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well.
4 Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires.
5 So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it aboasts of great things.
bSee how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!
6 And athe tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which bdefiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our 1life, and is set on fire by 2chell.
7 For every 1species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human 1race.
8 But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of adeadly poison.
9 With it we bless aour Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, bwho have been made in the likeness of God;
10 from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.
11 Does a fountain send out from the same opening both 1fresh and bitter water?
12 aCan a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce 1fresh.
13 Who among you is wise and understanding? aLet him show by his bgood behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom.
14 But if you have bitter ajealousy and 1selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against bthe truth.
15 This wisdom is not that which comes down afrom above, but is bearthly, 1cnatural, ddemonic.
16 For where ajealousy and 1selfish ambition exist, 2there is disorder and every evil thing.
17 But the wisdom afrom above is first bpure, then cpeaceable, dgentle, 1reasonable, efull of mercy and good fruits, funwavering, without ghypocrisy.
18 And the 1aseed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace 2by those who make peace.
1 1What is the source of quarrels and aconflicts among you? 2Is not the source your pleasures that wage bwar in your members?
2 You lust and do not have; so you acommit murder. You are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask.
3 You ask and ado not receive, because you ask 1with wrong motives, so that you may spend it 2on your pleasures.
4 You aadulteresses, do you not know that friendship with bthe world is chostility toward God? dTherefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
5 Or do you think that the Scripture aspeaks to no purpose: “1He 2jealously desires bthe Spirit which He has made to dwell in us”?
6 But aHe gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “bGod is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
7 aSubmit therefore to God. bResist the devil and he will flee from you.
8 aDraw near to God and He will draw near to you. bCleanse your hands, you sinners; and cpurify your hearts, you ddouble-minded.
9 aBe miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom.
10 aHumble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.
11 aDo not speak against one another, bbrethren. He who speaks against a brother or cjudges his brother, speaks against dthe law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not ea doer of the law but a judge of it.
12 There is only one aLawgiver and Judge, the One who is bable to save and to destroy; but cwho are you who judge your neighbor?
13 aCome now, you who say, “bToday or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.”
14 1Yet you do not know 2what your life will be like tomorrow. aYou are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.
15 1Instead, you ought to say, “aIf the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.”
16 But as it is, you boast in your 1arrogance; aall such boasting is evil.
17 Therefore, ato one who knows the 1right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.
1 aCome now, byou rich, cweep and howl for your miseries which are coming upon you.
2 aYour riches have rotted and your garments have become moth-eaten.
3 Your gold and your silver have rusted; and their rust will be a witness against you and will consume your flesh like fire. It is ain the last days that you have stored up your treasure!
4 Behold, athe pay of the laborers who mowed your fields, and which has been withheld by you, cries out against you; and bthe outcry of those who did the harvesting has reached the ears of cthe Lord of 1Sabaoth.
5 You have alived luxuriously on the earth and led a life of wanton pleasure; you have 1fattened your hearts in ba day of slaughter.
6 You have condemned and 1aput to death bthe righteous man; he does not resist you.
7 Therefore be patient, abrethren, buntil the coming of the Lord. cThe farmer waits for the precious produce of the soil, being patient about it, until 1it gets dthe early and late rains.
8 aYou too be patient; bstrengthen your hearts, for cthe coming of the Lord is dnear.
9 aDo not 1complain, bbrethren, against one another, so that you yourselves may not be judged; behold, cthe Judge is standing 2dright at the 3door.
10 As an example, abrethren, of suffering and patience, take bthe prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
11 We count those ablessed who endured. You have heard of bthe 1endurance of Job and have seen cthe 2outcome of the Lord’s dealings, that dthe Lord is full of compassion and is merciful.
12 But above all, amy brethren, bdo not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but 1your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment.
13 Is anyone among you asuffering? bThen he must pray. Is anyone cheerful? He is to csing praises.
14 Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for athe elders of the church and they are to pray over him, 1banointing him with oil in the name of the Lord;
15 and the aprayer 1offered in faith will 2brestore the one who is sick, and the Lord will craise him up, and if he has committed sins, 3they will be forgiven him.
16 Therefore, aconfess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be bhealed. cThe effective 1prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.
17 Elijah was aa man with a nature like ours, and bhe prayed 1earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for cthree years and six months.
18 Then he aprayed again, and bthe 1sky 2poured rain and the earth produced its fruit.
19 My brethren, aif any among you strays from bthe truth and one turns him back,
20 let him know that 1he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will asave his soul from death and will bcover a multitude of sins.
A Living Hope, and a Sure Salvation
1 aPeter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,
To those who reside as baliens, cscattered throughout dPontus, eGalatia, dCappadocia, dAsia, and fBithynia, gwho are chosen
2 according to the aforeknowledge of God the Father, bby the sanctifying work of the Spirit, 1to cobey Jesus Christ and be dsprinkled with His blood: eMay grace and peace 2be yours in the fullest measure.
3 aBlessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who baccording to His great mercy chas caused us to be born again to da living hope through the eresurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4 to obtain an ainheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and bwill not fade away, creserved in heaven for you,
5 who are aprotected by the power of God bthrough faith for ca salvation ready dto be revealed in the last time.
6 aIn this you greatly rejoice, even though now bfor a little while, cif necessary, you have been distressed by dvarious 1trials,
7 so that the 1aproof of your faith, being more precious than gold which 2is perishable, beven though tested by fire, cmay be found to result in praise and glory and honor at dthe revelation of Jesus Christ;
8 and athough you have not seen Him, you blove Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and 1full of glory,
9 obtaining as athe outcome of your faith the salvation of 1your souls.
10 aAs to this salvation, the prophets who bprophesied of the cgrace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries,
11 1seeking to know what person or time athe Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He bpredicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories 2to follow.
12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who apreached the gospel to you by bthe Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which cangels long to 1look.
13 Therefore, 1aprepare your minds for action, 2bkeep sober in spirit, fix your chope completely on the dgrace 3to be brought to you at ethe revelation of Jesus Christ.
14 As 1aobedient children, do not 2bbe conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your cignorance,
15 but 1alike the Holy One who called you, 2bbe holy yourselves also cin all your behavior;
16 because it is written, “aYou shall be holy, for I am holy.”
17 If you aaddress as Father the One who bimpartially cjudges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves din fear during the time of your estay on earth;
18 knowing that you were not 1aredeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your bfutile way of life inherited from your forefathers,
19 but with precious ablood, as of a blamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.
20 For He was aforeknown before bthe foundation of the world, but has cappeared 1in these last times dfor the sake of you
21 who through Him are abelievers in God, who raised Him from the dead and bgave Him glory, so that your faith and chope are in God.
22 Since you have ain obedience to the truth bpurified your souls for a 1csincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from 2the heart,
23 for you have been aborn again bnot of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring cword of God.
“aAll flesh is like grass,
And all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
And the flower falls off,
25 aBut the word of the Lord endures forever.”
1 Therefore, aputting aside all 1malice and all deceit and 2hypocrisy and 2envy and all 2bslander,
2 alike newborn babies, long for the 1bpure 2milk of the word, so that by it you may cgrow 3in respect to salvation,
3 if you have atasted 1bthe kindness of the Lord.
4 And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been arejected by men, but is 1choice and precious in the sight of God,
5 ayou also, as living stones, 1are being built up as a bspiritual house for a holy cpriesthood, to doffer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
6 For this is contained in 1Scripture:
“aBehold, I lay in Zion a choice stone, a bprecious corner stone,
And he who believes in 2Him will not be 3disappointed.”
7 aThis precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve,
“bThe stone which the builders crejected,
This became the very corner stone,”
“aA stone of stumbling and a rock of offense”;
bfor they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, cand to this doom they were also appointed.
9 But you are aa chosen race, a royal bpriesthood, a choly nation, da people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you eout of darkness into His marvelous light;
10 afor you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
11 aBeloved, bI urge you as caliens and strangers to abstain from dfleshly lusts which wage ewar against the soul.
12 aKeep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they bslander you as evildoers, they may 1because of your good deeds, as they observe them, cglorify God din the day of 2visitation.
13 aSubmit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority,
14 or to governors as sent 1by him afor the punishment of evildoers and the bpraise of those who do right.
15 For 1asuch is the will of God that by doing right you may bsilence the ignorance of foolish men.
16 Act as afree men, and 1do not use your freedom as a covering for evil, but use it as bbondslaves of God.
17 aHonor all people, blove the brotherhood, cfear God, dhonor the 1king.
18 aServants, be submissive to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and bgentle, but also to those who are 1unreasonable.
19 For this finds 1favor, if for the sake of aconscience toward God a person bears up under sorrows when suffering unjustly.
20 For what credit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated, you endure it with patience? But if awhen you do what is right and suffer for it you patiently endure it, this finds 1favor with God.
21 For ayou have been called for this purpose, bsince Christ also suffered for you, leaving you can example for you to follow in His steps,
22 who acommitted no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth;
23 1and while being areviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously;
24 and He Himself 1abore our sins in His body on the 2bcross, so that we cmight die to 3sin and live to righteousness; for dby His 4wounds you were ehealed.
25 For you were acontinually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the bShepherd and 1Guardian of your souls.
1 aIn the same way, you wives, bbe submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be cwon without a word by the behavior of their wives,
2 as they observe your chaste and 1respectful behavior.
3 aYour adornment must not be merely external—braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses;
4 but let it be athe hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.
5 For in this way in former times the holy women also, awho hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands;
6 just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, acalling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right 1bwithout being frightened by any fear.
7 aYou husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with 1bsomeone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.
8 1To sum up, aall of you be harmonious, sympathetic, bbrotherly, ckindhearted, and dhumble in spirit;
9 anot returning evil for evil or binsult for insult, but 1giving a cblessing instead; for dyou were called for the very purpose that you might einherit a blessing.
“aThe one who desires life, to love and see good days,
Must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.
11 “aHe must turn away from evil and do good;
He must seek peace and pursue it.
12 “aFor the eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous,
And His ears attend to their prayer,
But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”
13 aWho is 1there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good?
14 But even if you should asuffer for the sake of righteousness, byou 1are blessed. cAnd do not fear their 2intimidation, and do not be troubled,
15 but 1sanctify aChrist as Lord in your hearts, always being ready bto make a 2defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the ahope that is in you, yet cwith gentleness and 3dreverence;
16 1and keep a agood conscience so that in the thing in which byou are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame.
17 For ait is better, bif 1God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong.
18 For aChrist also died for sins bonce for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might cbring us to God, having been put to death din the flesh, but made alive ein the 1spirit;
19 in 1which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison,
20 who once were disobedient, when the apatience of God bkept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of cthe ark, in which a few, that is, deight epersons, were brought safely through the 1water.
21 aCorresponding to that, baptism now saves you—bnot the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God 1for a cgood conscience—through dthe resurrection of Jesus Christ,
22 awho is at the right hand of God, bhaving gone into heaven, cafter angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him.
1 Therefore, since aChrist has 1suffered in the flesh, barm yourselves also with the same purpose, because che who has 1suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,
2 aso as to live bthe rest of the time in the flesh no longer for the lusts of men, but for the cwill of God.
3 For athe time already past is sufficient for you to have carried out the desire of the Gentiles, 1bhaving pursued a course of sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties and 2abominable idolatries.
4 In all this, they are surprised that you do not run with them into the same excesses of adissipation, and they bmalign you;
5 but they will give account to Him who is ready to judge athe living and the dead.
6 For athe gospel has for this purpose been 1preached even to those who are dead, that though they are judged in the flesh as men, they may live in the spirit according to the will of God.
7 aThe end of all things 1is near; therefore, bbe of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of 2prayer.
8 Above all, akeep fervent in your love for one another, because blove covers a multitude of sins.
9 aBe hospitable to one another without bcomplaint.
10 aAs each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good bstewards of the manifold grace of God.
11 aWhoever speaks, is to do so 1as one who is speaking the butterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving 2cby the strength which God supplies; so that din all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, eto whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
Share the Sufferings of Christ
12 aBeloved, do not be surprised at the bfiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you;
13 but to the degree that you ashare the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the brevelation of His glory cyou may rejoice with exultation.
14 If you are reviled 1afor the name of Christ, byou are blessed, cbecause the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.
15 Make sure that anone of you suffers as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or a 1btroublesome meddler;
16 but if anyone suffers as a aChristian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to bglorify God in this name.
17 For it is time for judgment ato begin 1with bthe household of God; and if it cbegins with us first, what will be the outcome for those dwho do not obey the egospel of God?
18 aAnd if it is with difficulty that the righteous is saved, 1what will become of the bgodless man and the sinner?
19 Therefore, those also who suffer according to athe will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right.
1 aTherefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your bfellow elder and cwitness of the sufferings of Christ, and a dpartaker also of the glory that is to be revealed,
2 shepherd athe flock of God among you, exercising oversight bnot under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and cnot for sordid gain, but with eagerness;
3 nor yet as alording it over 1those allotted to your charge, but 2proving to be bexamples to the flock.
4 And when the Chief aShepherd appears, you will receive the bunfading 1ccrown of glory.
5 aYou younger men, likewise, bbe subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with chumility toward one another, for dGod is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
6 Therefore ahumble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time,
7 casting all your aanxiety on Him, because He cares for you.
8 aBe of sober spirit, bbe on the alert. Your adversary, cthe devil, prowls around like a roaring dlion, seeking someone to devour.
9 1aBut resist him, bfirm in your faith, knowing that cthe same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your 2brethren who are in the world.
10 After you have suffered afor a little while, the bGod of all grace, who ccalled you to His deternal glory in Christ, will Himself eperfect, fconfirm, strengthen and establish you.
11 aTo Him be dominion forever and ever. Amen.
12 Through aSilvanus, our faithful brother 1(for so I regard him), bI have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying that this is cthe true grace of God. dStand firm in it!
13 She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, and so does my son, aMark.
14 aGreet one another with a kiss of love.
bPeace be to you all who are in Christ.
1 1Simon Peter, a abond-servant and bapostle of Jesus Christ,
To those who have received ca faith of the same 2kind as ours, 3by dthe righteousness of eour God and Savior, Jesus Christ:
2 aGrace and peace be multiplied to you in bthe knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord;
3 seeing that His adivine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true bknowledge of Him who ccalled us 1by His own glory and 2excellence.
4 1For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent apromises, so that by them you may become bpartakers of the divine nature, having cescaped the dcorruption that is in ethe world by lust.
5 Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith asupply bmoral 1excellence, and in your moral excellence, cknowledge,
6 and in your knowledge, aself-control, and in your self-control, bperseverance, and in your perseverance, cgodliness,
7 and in your godliness, abrotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love.
8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor aunfruitful in the true bknowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 For he who lacks these qualities is ablind or short-sighted, having forgotten his bpurification from his former sins.
10 Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His acalling and bchoosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never cstumble;
11 for in this way the entrance into athe eternal kingdom of our bLord and Savior Jesus Christ will be cabundantly dsupplied to you.
12 Therefore, aI will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them, and have been established in bthe truth which is present with you.
13 I consider it aright, as long as I am in bthis earthly dwelling, to cstir you up by way of reminder,
14 knowing that athe laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, bas also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.
15 And I will also be diligent that at any time after my adeparture you will be able to call these things to mind.
16 For we did not follow cleverly devised atales when we made known to you the bpower and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were ceyewitnesses of His majesty.
17 For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an 1autterance as this was 2made to Him by the bMajestic Glory, “This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased”—
18 and we ourselves heard this 1utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the aholy mountain.
19 1So we have athe prophetic word made more bsure, to which you do well to pay attention as to ca lamp shining in a dark place, until the dday dawns and the emorning star arises fin your hearts.
20 But aknow this first of all, that bno prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation,
21 for ano prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men bmoved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
1 But afalse prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be bfalse teachers camong you, who will dsecretly introduce edestructive heresies, even fdenying the gMaster who hbought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves.
2 Many will follow their asensuality, and because of them bthe way of the truth will be cmaligned;
3 and in their agreed they will bexploit you with cfalse words; dtheir judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.
4 For aif God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and bcommitted them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment;
5 and did not spare athe ancient world, but preserved bNoah, a 1preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a cflood upon the world of the ungodly;
6 and if He acondemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, having made them an bexample to those who would clive ungodly lives thereafter;
7 and if He arescued righteous Lot, oppressed by the bsensual conduct of cunprincipled men
8 (for by what he saw and heard that arighteous man, while living among them, felt his righteous soul tormented day after day by their lawless deeds),
9 athen the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from 1temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the bday of judgment,
10 and especially those who 1aindulge the flesh in its corrupt desires and bdespise authority.
Daring, cself-willed, they do not tremble when they brevile angelic 2majesties,
11 awhereas angels who are greater in might and power do not bring a reviling judgment against them before the Lord.
12 But athese, like unreasoning animals, bborn as creatures of instinct to be captured and killed, reviling where they have no knowledge, will in 1the destruction of those creatures also be destroyed,
13 suffering wrong as athe wages of doing wrong. They count it a pleasure to brevel in the cdaytime. They are stains and blemishes, breveling in their 1deceptions, as they dcarouse with you,
14 having eyes full of adultery that never cease from sin, aenticing bunstable souls, having a heart trained in cgreed, daccursed children;
15 forsaking athe right way, they have gone astray, having followed bthe way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved cthe wages of unrighteousness;
16 but he received a rebuke for his own transgression, afor a mute donkey, speaking with a voice of a man, restrained the madness of the prophet.
17 These are asprings without water and mists driven by a storm, bfor whom the 1black darkness has been reserved.
18 For speaking out aarrogant words of bvanity they centice by fleshly desires, by dsensuality, those who barely eescape from the ones who live in error,
19 promising them freedom while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for aby what a man is overcome, by this he is enslaved.
20 For if, after they have aescaped the defilements of the world by bthe knowledge of the cLord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again dentangled in them and are overcome, ethe last state has become worse for them than the first.
21 aFor it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from bthe holy commandment chanded on to them.
22 1It has happened to them according to the true proverb, “aA dog returns to its own vomit,” and, “A sow, after washing, returns to wallowing in the mire.”
1 This is now, abeloved, the second letter I am writing to you in which I am bstirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder,
2 that you should aremember the words spoken beforehand by bthe holy prophets and cthe commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles.
3 aKnow this first of all, that bin the last days cmockers will come with their mocking, dfollowing after their own lusts,
4 and saying, “aWhere is the promise of His bcoming? For ever since the fathers cfell asleep, all continues just as it was dfrom the beginning of creation.”
5 For 1when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that aby the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was bformed out of water and by water,
6 through which athe world at that time was bdestroyed, being flooded with water.
7 But by His word athe present heavens and earth are being reserved for bfire, kept for cthe day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
8 But do not let this one fact escape your notice, abeloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and ba thousand years like one day.
9 aThe Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but bis patient toward you, cnot wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
10 But athe day of the Lord bwill come like a thief, in which cthe heavens dwill pass away with a roar and the eelements will be destroyed with intense heat, and fthe earth and 1its works will be 2burned up.
11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,
12 alooking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which bthe heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the celements will melt with intense heat!
13 But according to His apromise we are looking for bnew heavens and a new earth, cin which righteousness dwells.
14 aTherefore, bbeloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be cfound by Him in peace, dspotless and blameless,
15 and regard the apatience of our Lord as salvation; just as also bour beloved brother Paul, caccording to the wisdom given him, wrote to you,
16 as also in all his letters, speaking in them of athese things, bin which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and cunstable distort, as they do also dthe rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction.
17 You therefore, abeloved, knowing this beforehand, bbe on your guard so that you are not carried away by cthe error of dunprincipled men and efall from your own steadfastness,
18 but grow in the grace and aknowledge of our bLord and Savior Jesus Christ. cTo Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
Introduction, The Incarnate Word
1 What was afrom the beginning, what we have bheard, what we have cseen with our eyes, what we dhave looked at and etouched with our hands, concerning the fWord of Life—
2 and athe life was manifested, and we have bseen and ctestify and proclaim to you dthe eternal life, which was ewith the Father and was amanifested to us—
3 what we have aseen and bheard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our cfellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ.
4 aThese things we write, so that our bjoy may be made complete.
5 aThis is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that bGod is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.
6 aIf we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we blie and cdo not practice the truth;
7 but if we awalk in the Light as bHe Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and cthe blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.
8 aIf we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the btruth is not in us.
9 aIf we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and bto cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 aIf we say that we have not sinned, we bmake Him a liar and cHis word is not in us.
1 aMy little children, I am bwriting these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, cwe have an 1dAdvocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous;
2 and He Himself is athe 1propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also bfor those of the whole world.
3 aBy this we know that we have come to bknow Him, if we ckeep His commandments.
4 The one who says, “aI have come to bknow Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a cliar, and dthe truth is not in him;
5 but whoever akeeps His word, in him the blove of God has truly been perfected. cBy this we know that we are in Him:
6 the one who says he aabides in Him bought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.
7 aBeloved, I am bnot writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had cfrom the beginning; the old commandment is the word which you have heard.
8 1On the other hand, I am writing aa new commandment to you, which is true in Him and in you, because bthe darkness is passing away and cthe true Light is already shining.
9 The one who says he is in the Light and yet ahates his bbrother is in the darkness until now.
10 aThe one who loves his brother abides in the Light and there is no cause for stumbling in him.
11 But the one who ahates his brother is in the darkness and bwalks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going because the darkness has cblinded his eyes.
12 I am writing to you, alittle children, because byour sins have been forgiven you for His name’s sake.
13 I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him awho has been from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because byou have overcome cthe evil one. I have written to you, children, because dyou know the Father.
14 I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him awho has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are bstrong, and the cword of God abides in you, and dyou have overcome the evil one.
15 Do not love athe world nor the things in the world. bIf anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, athe lust of the flesh and bthe lust of the eyes and cthe boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
17 aThe world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who bdoes the will of God lives forever.
18 Children, ait is the last hour; and just as you heard that bantichrist is coming, ceven now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour.
19 aThey went out from us, but they were not really of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out, bso that 1it would be shown that they all are not of us.
20 1But you have an aanointing from bthe Holy One, and cyou all know.
21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but abecause you do know it, and 1because no lie is bof the truth.
22 Who is the liar but athe one who denies that Jesus is the 1Christ? This is bthe antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son.
23 aWhoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also.
24 As for you, let that abide in you which you heard afrom the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also bwill abide in the Son and in the Father.
25 aThis is the promise which He Himself 1made to us: eternal life.
26 These things I have written to you concerning those who are trying to adeceive you.
27 As for you, the aanointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing bteaches you about all things, and is ctrue and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, 1you abide in Him.
28 Now, alittle children, abide in Him, so that when He bappears, we may have cconfidence and dnot 1shrink away from Him in shame 2at His ecoming.
29 If you know that aHe is righteous, you know that everyone also who practices righteousness bis 1born of Him.
Children of God Love One Another
1 See 1ahow great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called bchildren of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because cit did not know Him.
2 aBeloved, now we are bchildren of God, and cit has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He dappears, we will be elike Him, because we will fsee Him just as He is.
3 And everyone who has this ahope fixed on Him bpurifies himself, just as He is pure.
4 Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and asin is lawlessness.
5 You know that He aappeared in order to btake away sins; and cin Him there is no sin.
6 No one who abides in Him asins; no one who sins has seen Him or 1bknows Him.
7 aLittle children, make sure no one bdeceives you; cthe one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous;
8 the one who practices sin is aof the devil; for the devil 1has sinned from the beginning. bThe Son of God cappeared for this purpose, dto destroy the works of the devil.
9 No one who is 1aborn of God bpractices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is 1born of God.
10 By this the achildren of God and the bchildren of the devil are obvious: 1anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who cdoes not love his dbrother.
11 aFor this is the message bwhich you have heard from the beginning, cthat we should love one another;
12 not as aCain, who was of bthe evil one and slew his brother. And for what reason did he slay him? Because chis deeds were evil, and his brother’s were righteous.
13 Do not be surprised, brethren, if athe world hates you.
14 We know that we have apassed out of death into life, bbecause we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death.
15 Everyone who ahates his brother is a murderer; and you know that bno murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
16 We know love by this, that aHe laid down His life for us; and bwe ought to lay down our lives for the cbrethren.
17 But awhoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and bcloses his 1heart 2against him, chow does the love of God abide in him?
18 aLittle children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and btruth.
19 We will know by this that we are aof the truth, and will 1assure our heart before Him
20 1in whatever our heart condemns us; for God is greater than our heart and knows all things.
21 aBeloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have bconfidence 1before God;
22 and awhatever we ask we receive from Him, because we bkeep His commandments and do cthe things that are pleasing in His sight.
23 This is His commandment, that we 1abelieve in bthe name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as cHe 2commanded us.
24 The one who akeeps His commandments babides in Him, and He in him. cWe know by this that dHe abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.
1 aBeloved, do not believe every bspirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because cmany false prophets have gone out into the world.
2 By this you know the Spirit of God: aevery spirit that bconfesses that cJesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God;
3 and every spirit that adoes not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the bantichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and cnow it is already in the world.
4 You are from God, alittle children, and bhave overcome them; because cgreater is He who is in you than dhe who is in the world.
5 aThey are from the world; therefore they speak as from the world, and the world listens to them.
6 aWe are from God; bhe who knows God listens to us; che who is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know dthe spirit of truth and ethe spirit of error.
7 aBeloved, let us blove one another, for love is from God; and ceveryone who loves is 1dborn of God and eknows God.
8 The one who does not love does not know God, for aGod is love.
9 By this the love of God was manifested 1ain us, that bGod has sent His 2only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him.
10 In this is love, anot that we loved God, but that bHe loved us and sent His Son to be cthe propitiation for our sins.
11 aBeloved, if God so loved us, bwe also ought to love one another.
12 aNo one has seen God at any time; if we love one another, God abides in us, and His blove is perfected in us.
13 aBy this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.
14 We have seen and atestify that the Father has bsent the Son to be the Savior of the world.
15 aWhoever confesses that bJesus is the Son of God, God cabides in him, and he in God.
16 aWe have come to know and have believed the love which God has 1bfor us. cGod is love, and the one who dabides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
17 By this, alove is perfected with us, so that we may have bconfidence in cthe day of judgment; because das He is, so also are we in this world.
18 There is no fear in love; but aperfect love casts out fear, because fear 1involves punishment, and the one who fears is not bperfected in love.
19 aWe love, because He first loved us.
20 aIf someone says, “I love God,” and bhates his brother, he is a cliar; for dthe one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, ecannot love God whom he has not seen.
21 And athis commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God bshould love his brother also.
